Feeling a bit like Heidi Klum!

Make it special

Whatever it is, the way you communicate your story online can make a huge difference.

An impressive CV and the skills required for the next career step. An assessment centre as a hurdle to achieve this goal. Me as a coach who helps with the preparation and suddenly feels a little bit like Heidi Klum sending her models out onto the catwalk. Finally, the joy when the feedback is positive and new career opportunities open up. I had the pleasure of experiencing this several times in the last few weeks.

A few tricks if you are in an application process yourself now

  • Why is this position your next career move? And what do you bring to the table to convince me? As a 3-minute pitch, this is a great conversation starter.

  • You are not an applicant, but the new team member who the interviewer wishes to get to know! Such an inner attitude is crucial because it puts you in a more relaxed storytelling mood rather than a stressed-out persuasion behaviour.

  • If the questions you are asked do not allow you to show your true strengths, it does not matter. Answer the question as shortly as possible and, after a transition, add the desired message in the sense of ‘...but more important to me is...’, ‘...what I wish to add...’ etc.

  • Have the courage to be yourself. We spend most of the week at work and I am sure you are like me: you do not wisht to constantly pretend and be someone else. This makes it all the more important to get to know each other as honestly as possible so that both sides can decide whether it is a good fit.

  • Breathe out and smile inwardly. Under stress, we forget to exhale, which makes our voice less full and convincing. Instead of self-doubt or criticism, smiling inwardly and outwardly has a binding effect and brings you into contact with yourself.
